2012 Denmark Open MD winner :Yoo Yeon Seong
The new South Korean men’s doubles pairing of Yoo Yeon Seong / Shin Baek Choel beat top Malaysian pair Koo Kien Keat / Tan Boon Heong 2:1 in the final at the Denmark Open. By taking this title the pair sent out the message that everyone’s attention shouldn’t only be focused on Ko Sung hyun / Lee Yong Dae, every top South Korean men’s doubles pair is to be feared.
Facing the determined challenge of the talented Malaysian pair, Yoo was unflustered as in previous meetings with the pair with his previous partner Ko Sung hyun he had beaten the Malaysian pair six times in seven meetings. The first game was fiercely contested, with both sides taking it in turns to lead, however, the South Koreans made some unforced errors and went down 19:21.
After changing ends,Yoo / Shin dominated the play and a number of powerful smashes from the back of the court left their opponents unable to respond, the South Korean pair taking the second game 21:11. Both sides upped the rhythm of play in the deciding third, both wanting to dominate the front-center of the court and, at one point, they were tied 19:19. In the end the South Koreans had a stroke of luck and won when their shot hit the net but still went over. This was the pair’s first win on their first appearance in a premier Super Series tournament.
In other disciplines, Lee Chong Wei took the men’s single title, the best 30th birthday present for the Malaysian. The women’s singles was won by top Indian player Saina Nehwal, while the women’s doubles title was claimed by China’s Ma Jin / Tang Jin Hua. Ma Jin/Xu Chen took the mixed doubles title, Ma ending as the biggest winner in the tournament, taking two titles.
