2012 French Open MD winner :Ko Sung hyun / Lee Yong Dae
South Korea pair Ko Sung hyun / Lee Yong Dae showed steely determination to come back from a game down to win the men’s doubles title at the French Open. The title was their first Super Series win since they began playing together. In taking the title the pair sent out the message that South Korea’s new men’s doubles combinations are a force to be reckoned with.
In the final against Thailand’s Maneepong Jongjit/Bodin Issara the South Koreans started well and maintained a lead, however, the Thai pair found their rhythm in the middle of the game and, making good use of their physical prowess, they played a high speed game featuring successive leaping shots, first leveling the score and hen going into the lead. Even though Ko / Lee saved a series of game points the Thai pair were still able to take the game 24:22.
After changing ends the Thai pair keep up the pressure and had Ko / Lee on the rack, however, the South Koreans relied on their years of experience at the top level to claw their way back into the game and take the steam out of the Thai’s attack, taking the game 21:17 to level the match at 1:1. In the final game the Thais were unable to keep up their high speed play and struggled to match Ko/Lee, the South Korean pair taking the game 21:11, and with it the match.
In other disciplines, the men’s singles title was claimed by Malaysia’s Daren Liew, while there was a big surprise in the women’s singles when Japan’s Mitani Minatsu beat fancied India player Saina Nehwal 21:19, 21:11 to take her first ever individual Super Series title. In the women’ doubles China’s Ma Jin/Tang Jin Hua beat Denmark’s Kamilla Rytter Juhl / Christina Pedersen in straight games; the mixed doubles title as taken by Xu Chen / Ma Jin.g / Zhao Yunlei
