VICTOR STAR to watch: Tai Tzu Ying
Tai Tzu Ying made her last and only Uber Cup appearance in 2012, when she was just 17, claiming both victories in the preliminary round robin, which included a win over future World Champion Ratchanok Inthanon, and led Chinese Taipei to the quarters before falling to eventual runner-up Korea. Tai will return to this year’s competition as high as #7 in the world and hope to inspire Taiwan in the venture.

Player to beat
China celebrated their ninth Thomas Cup and the twelfth Uber Cup wins in the last events, and will again field a stellar squad of players for their title defense this year including Lin Dan, Chen Long, and the top 3 in women’s singles, Li Xuerui, Wang Shixian, and Wang Yihan.

Record to be made
Lin Dan of China had been out of competition since last August before his comeback in April when he won both tournaments – China Masters GPG and Badminton Asia Championships, reeling off a 10-match streak that is most likely to continue in this week as he can only be recruited in the third singles spot.

Match not to miss
Korean stars Lee Yong Dae and Kim Ki Jung have been sidelined for four months by the recently overturned suspensions and should be relied on for the two doubles points for Korea with a comeback showing on Monday against host India.

Did you know?
Only three teams – Indonesia, Malaysia, and China, have ever clinched victories in Thomas Cup since the inaugural team event in 1949, with Indonesia the most successful, being crowned 13 times.
