Tai Tzu Ying Clinched Her Third Indonesia Open Title with Consecutive Comeback Victories
2022-06-20
At the BWF World Tour Super 1000 Indonesia Open last week, Tai Tzu Ying from Team VICTOR was crowned the champion after defeating Wang Zhi Yi of China, the winner of the 2022 Badminton Asia Championships, and won her second straight title of the season after the Thailand Open in May.
During 2022 Indonesia Open, Tai pulled out remarkable comeback victories in the semifinal and final rounds. In the semifinal clash against Chen Yu Fei of China, her rival in the Thailand Open final last month, Tai saved five match-points in a thrilling second game, and ultimately won the match 10-21, 26-24, 21-12 to advance to the finals.
In the finals against Wang Zhi Yi of China, the two players exchanged leads in the first game but Tai missed the victory by 21-23. However, in the second game, she soon recovered to her best condition with her signature style of play and even ran up a 11-0 lead in the beginning of the game. Tai eventually took the next two games 21-6 and 21-15 to clinch the title! It is not only Tai Tzu Ying’s second champion this season but also her third Indonesia Open title. Most importantly, this victory also marks Tai’s new record of 24 Super Series titles (above Super 500)!
Team VICTOR’s Malaysian Ace Lee Zii Jia also exhibited outstanding performance. Zii Jia made his way to the semifinal where he played against the World No.1 Viktor Axelsen. The two players were tied after the first two games and took the match to a decider. Zii Jia demonstrated powerful mental toughness, even saving four match-points to take the lead 21-20, but succumbed at the end 19-21, 21-11, 23-21. Despite the close loss, Zii Jia has definitely played a top match and his future is for sure unlimited.
After the amazing tournaments in Indonesia, the next battleground will take place in Malaysia in two weeks. VICTORis here to invite everyone to cheer for Team VICTORand #ShowYourStrength!
